Medical student surgical proficiency and confidence on the core surgical clerkship

We investigated how students’ surgical self-proficiency and self-confidence changed during the core clerkship to better understand students learn in operating room (OR), which receives mixed reviews as a medical student learning environment. Student demographics, self-rated ability perform set of proficiencies for common operation, OR were assessed at three clinical sites beginning end clerkship. Self-proficiency metrics created with maximum scores 72 45, respectively. Pre- post-clerkship compared analyzed associations demographics. 103 (89%) completed pre-clerkship survey 74 (64%) survey. Mean confidence significantly increased by (p < 0.001). Before clerkship, female (n = 46) had lower mean proficiency (20.9 ± 7.6 vs. 28.3 13.1, p 0.001) (22.5 5.1 27.5 5.4, scores, less likely feel comfortable [adjusted odds ratio (95% interval) 0.19 (0.07–0.54)] view supportive environment [0.18 (0.06–0.59)], more anxious [3.17 (1.33–7.53)]. No significant gender-based differences observed. Students experiences higher (29.5 11.6 19.9 9.4, 0.0001) (27.0 6.0 22.9 4.9, 0.0003) well likelihood feeling CI) 7.14 (2.53–20.14)] [0.32 (0.10–0.98)]. Students’ throughout though various factors such gender prior experience influence baseline levels may represent important targets intervention.
